My name is Janice Mitchell Isbell.  I am a doctoral student at Northcentral University. I am conducting a research study on whether culturally relevant tutoring on the academics
, class participation and self-efficacy of low-achieving and at-risk middle school students.  I am completing this research as part of my doctoral degree.  I invite you to participate.  Culturally Relevant Tutoring is tutoring which incorporates the students’ culture:  Demographic Backgrounds, Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligences, Personality Types, and Self-Efficacy.  The tutors integrate the students’ culture into the tutoring session (Gunn, Bennett, Evans, Peterson, & Welsh, 2013 Ju, Choi, Rhee, & Tae-Lee, 2016).

The assessment process includes the students completing 5 surveys (total time 45 minutes) and the tutors completing 4 surveys (total time 45 minutes).  The time commitment includes 2 tutoring classes each week for 6 weeks.  The classes provide tutoring on Fractions, Decimals, Percent, and Basic Algebra.  The study is being conducted to determine if the Culturally Relevant Tutoring is tutoring which incorporates the students’ culture:  Demographic Backgrounds, Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligences, Personality Types, and Self-Efficacy increases Students’ Academics, Class Participation, and Self-Efficacy.

If you participate in this research, you will be asked to:

Complete 4 surveys totaling 45 minutes, before and after the tutoring program.
Cultural Competence Survey
Learning Styles Inventory
Multiple Intelligences
Big 5 Personality Test

Participate in a tutor training program, and as a tutor as part of the experimental group, in regard to culturally relevant tutoring.

You are eligible to participate in this research if you:
Are adults (age 18 or older) proficient in mathematics through AlgebraI.
Are willing to participate in a training program for tutors.

You are not eligible to participate in this research if you:
Are adults (age 18 or older) not proficient in mathematics through Algebra1.
Are not willing to participate in a training program for tutors.

I hope to include 126 students and 15 tutors in this research.

There are minimal risks in this study.  Some possible risks include:
Stress. A participant may feel anxious learning new materials.
The tutors may feel anxious learning news methods of tutoring diverse students.

To decrease the impact of these risks:
The participants can skip any question they do not want to answer.
You can end your participation in this study at any time.

If you decide to participate, the direct benefits to you are: 
You may become a better tutor.
You may enhance your cultural competence, as measured by the Cultural Competence Survey.

The potential benefits to others are:
The students will have enhanced mathematics skills to pursue higher levels of mathematics.
The students are better qualified to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers, contributing to society.
The education field has another tool to enhance tutoring of diverse students.

The information you provide in the questionnaires will be kept confidential to the extent allowable by law.  Some steps I will take to keep your identity confidential are:

To decrease the risks of invasion of privacy and breach of confidentiality, your personal identifiable data will be maintained by keeping all materials associated with the study in a locked file cabinet.
The surveys and questionnaires will remain anonymous.
Each form will be scanned to a thumb drive.  The thumb drive will remain in the locked cabinet for a period of 7 years.
At that time, all materials will be deleted and destroyed.  All personal identifiable information will be removed to ensure confidentiality, during the study and when reporting results.

The people who will have access to your information are myself, and/or my dissertation chair, and/or my dissertation committee, etc.  The Institutional Review Board may also review my research and view your information.

Voluntary Participation:
Your participation is voluntary.  If you decide not to participate, or if you stop participation after you start, there will be no penalty to you.  You will not lose any benefit to which you are otherwise entitled.

To thank you for your willingness to participate, you will be given light snacks before and after each session, with an approximate value of $5 each session.

Mandated Reporting:
I am required to report suspicion of child or elderly abuse to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.  If you suspect child abuse, please notify me.
If you are concerned a child might hurt himself/herself, please notify me.  I will contact the parents.
If you are concerned a child might hurt someone else, please notify me.  I will warn the victim and contact the parents.
